Apple disables AI news summaries after they invented headlines
Apple switched off Apple Intelligence notification summaries for the News and Entertainment category in the iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3 and macOS Sequoia 15.3 betas, saying the feature would be temporarily unavailable while it works on improvements.
The summaries were optional and limited to the newest iPhones, but they carried the news organization's own branding, and they were wrong repeatedly: one alert told readers the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson had shot himself. The BBC complained in December 2024 and got no reply until January; Reporters Without Borders and the National Union of Journalists had both called for withdrawal, and Apple's initial fix of italicizing the text to mark it as AI-generated satisfied nobody.

WHY IT MATTERS
The clearest consumer-facing example of a summarization product damaging real publishers: the failure was not a stale index or a bad ranking, it was a model writing sentences no source ever contained and attaching them to a trusted masthead. For anyone shipping summarization over untrusted documents — agent receipts, PR digests, log triage — attribution and confidence are the product, not fluency.
